Preventing Myopia-Related Eye Diseases

In today’s digital age, myopia, or nearsightedness, has become increasingly prevalent among children. With the rise in screen time and limited outdoor activities, the risk of myopia-related eye diseases looms larger than ever. Early intervention is key to safeguarding your child’s vision and preventing serious complications down the road.

Myopia doesn’t just affect clarity of vision; it can also pave the way for a host of eye conditions that can significantly impact quality of life. Here’s why proactive management is crucial:

Glaucoma: Often referred to as the “silent thief of sight,” glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, leading to gradual vision loss. Myopia can increase the risk of developing glaucoma later in life, making regular eye exams essential for early detection and treatment.

Cataracts: Clouding of the eye’s lens, cataracts, can cause blurry vision and difficulty seeing in low light. While cataracts commonly occur with age, studies have shown a correlation between myopia and earlier onset of cataract development. By addressing myopia early on, you can help delay the onset of cataracts and preserve your child’s vision.

Retinal Detachment: This emergency condition occurs when the retina pulls away from the supportive tissue, leading to severe vision impairment if not promptly treated. Myopia increases the risk of retinal detachment, emphasizing the importance of regular eye check-ups to monitor the health of the retina.

Myopic Macular Degeneration: The macula, responsible for central vision, can deteriorate due to myopia, leading to irreversible vision loss. Myopic macular degeneration can severely impact daily activities such as reading and recognizing faces. By managing myopia proactively, you can mitigate the risk of this debilitating condition.

Monitoring and Eye Care Tips During Ortho-K Lens Usage

Ortho-K lenses have been proven safe and effective in controlling the progression of myopia and temporarily correcting nearsightedness for users. However, during the initial period, patients may experience some symptoms in their eyes. Read on to distinguish common or unusual symptoms caused by Ortho-K lenses, as well as some other tips to protect your child’s eyes and maximize the benefits of the lenses during usage!

Understanding Common Symptoms in the Initial Period

While Ortho-K lenses do not affect sleep quality, users may feel slight discomfort in the first few days. This phenomenon typically improves over time, so there’s no need to worry excessively. Additionally, users can minimize this condition by applying artificial tears to enhance moisture and support lens movement on the eyes upon waking up.

Some common symptoms include:

  • Sensation of a foreign object and slight discomfort in the eyes.
  • Mild dryness and flaking at the eye corners upon waking up.
  • Unstable vision in the first few weeks of wearing Ortho-K lenses.
  • Glare and halos at night, especially in the first few months of wearing Ortho-K lenses.

Some unusual symptoms include:

  • Eye pain, light sensitivity.
  • Burning, stinging, and excessive tearing.
  • Redness of the eyes.
  • Sensation of the lens sticking to the eye and difficulty removing the lens in the morning.

When encountering unusual symptoms, users should remove the lenses, clean them with preservative-free saline solution, and then wear them again. If the symptoms persist, discontinue lens usage and visit us for examination and advice from an optometrist.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR CLEAR VISION WITH ORTHO-K LENSES?

Ortho-K cannot completely restore clear vision after just one night of use. Instead, patients will gradually notice positive changes in their vision.

First day

After the first night of wearing Ortho-K lenses, patients may experience significantly improved vision but not yet fully sharp. It’s essential to persist in wearing them and follow up with regular appointments with an optometrist to assess compatibility and make necessary adjustments to ensure safety and effectiveness.

After one week

For some patients, vision may already be restored to sharpness at this point. Additionally, patients may notice halos around lights, especially in low-light conditions. This is normal and will typically disappear within a few days to a few weeks.

After one month

Most patients can achieve clear daytime vision after one month of using Ortho-K lenses. To ensure long-term stability and effectiveness, it’s important to adhere to regular follow-up appointments every 1-3 months with an optometrist.

Depending on the degree of refractive error and the level of adjustment of the lenses, patients can expect their vision to improve as follows:

  • For low myopia (under -2.00D), clear vision can be achieved after 3-4 days of use.
  • For mild to moderate myopia (-2.00 to -4.00D), clear vision can be achieved after 1 -2 weeks of use.
  • For moderate to high myopia (-4.00 to -6.00D), clear vision can be achieved after 2-6 weeks of use.
  • For high myopia (over -6.00D), clear vision can be achieved after 3-8 weeks of use.

Guidelines for Usage

To achieve the desired effectiveness, patients need to adhere to several rules during the usage process:

  • Visit an optometrist and purchase Ortho-K lenses as prescribed. Do not buy Ortho-K lenses of unknown origin or quality on the market without proper guidance.
  • Follow the instructions for usage (wearing and removing lenses) as directed by the optometrist.
  • Store the lenses properly to prevent breakage, reduce the risk of infection, and extend their lifespan.
  • Adhere to the regular follow-up schedule with the optometrist: 1 week – 1 month – 3 months. Contact the optometrist immediately if experiencing any unusual symptoms for timely assistance.

Following these guidelines will ensure a safe and effective Ortho-K lens experience, while also maintaining optimal eye health.

Ortho-K: Sleeping in Contact Lenses Safely

Discover the convenience of clear vision throughout the day with contact lenses that work while you sleep. Orthokeratology, commonly known as Ortho-K, offers a well-established treatment plan for vision correction, providing the freedom from glasses or contact lenses during waking hours. Custom-designed rigid contact lenses are worn overnight, and upon removal in the morning, immediate vision improvement is evident.

Ortho-K is suitable for most prescriptions, with a predominant use in children and teenagers to slow the progression of shortsightedness or myopia. Studies indicate its effectiveness, showing up to a 60-80% reduction in progression, positioning it as a leading intervention for managing myopia in younger individuals.

The lenses function by gently reshaping the cornea, the front structure of the eye. This reshaping is temporary and reversible upon discontinuation. When worn consistently, these lenses can serve as an effective treatment over many years.

Parents can rest easily when their child uses Ortho-K

Ortho-k utilizes rigid gas permeable lenses that allow oxygen to reach your child’s eyes so that the eyes remain healthy. Ortho-k lenses safely and effectively work while your child sleeps, temporarily providing clear vision during your child’s waking hours, and slowing the progression of myopia.

As long as your child handles the lenses according to the instructions of our optometrist and observes hygiene protocols when using them (washing hands first, using only the designated solutions to clean and rinse the lenses, etc.), ortho-k lenses can be safely used.
